I take it back. Those dolls are perfect to mod the hell out of. But generally speaking, the cheaper a doll is, the more you have to do to make it look good.

Oh, and thanks to a certain Avatar fanatic, I am working on creating a Na'vi OC.

1:50 pm - Volks Snobbery
You know, I've met Volks FANS, but no actual Volks SNOBS. As in, "Volks are the only good dolls, everything else is just crap."
I pretend to be a Volks snob sometimes because I think it's hilarious. Of my four (FOUR! How did I get to FOUR?) dolls, two are Volks.
For all the accusations of exclusivity, Volks is amazingly fair with its business model. Pretty much everyone has a chance to score a limited. You don't need to have attended the event. You can just do it online.
So yes, as a company, I mostly like Volks. I rag on it in fun sometimes.

On Volks Standards...

I think Kanata would do better as a girl, kind a tomboyish girl. And Rinon I'd like to see repainted as a young boy, younger than Jon. I don't actually HAVE a character who is younger than Jon, but I can rectify that. Also, Kun is ADORABLE repainted.
One day, when I feel like BALLIN, I think I'll do the following:
Get Kanata, Kun, and Rinon.

Put Kanata's head on SD-13G body, repaint as a girl.
Put Rinon's head on SD10B body, repaint as a boy.
Keep Kun's head on her own body and repaint.
Swap out Kun and boy!Rinon's limbs so Kun is a tall girl and Boy!Rinon is a short boy. (I don't see why SD-10 boys are taller than SD-10 girls as real girls that age have gone through their growth spurt already while most of the boys haven't)

Then I'd have to think of characters for them. Wow. Actually think up NEW CHARACTERS? What is the world coming to?!

PS: utopiantrunks, you make me want a Yo Kun so bad. Asa is just LOVE.

More doll notes:

1. Still waiting for Iple Dark Aaron rerelease. Come on, guys. Cocori too, while you're at it. Even though I don't have a character for Cocori, I'D THINK OF ONE.

2. Junior Delf Terra is really cute. Hmm.

3. Lots of people don't like Domuya headsculpts but the Ida mold seems perfect for one of my (admittedly harsh looking) characters...

4. I'm going to get a Dollstown Elf with prolly the Seola head or something and mod the crap out of it. This is after I move, of course, because Dolpa is likely to hit me hard.

4:03 pm - Top Five Reasons Why Volks Pisses Me Off
I'm not going to bitch and complain that Volks is expensive. They do not outsource their resin casting, though I'm not sure on their vinyl models. I'm also not going to complain that Volks is exclusive. It's their way of not biting off more than they can chew with production. No, I have five very good reasons as to why Volks pisses me the shit off and they have nothing to do about the last canceled Dolpa, either.

1. Volks Eye Putty is horrible: Volks spends quite a lot of effort marketing themselves based on quality. They deliver a solid product and so people are not adverse to paying premium prices to get said product. That's all well and good provided that all your products are premium quality in the first place. I purchased Volks eye putty as a clueless n00b, that I felt if Volks stamped their name on it it would work well and not harm my doll. Well, I got one thing right... it didn't hurt my doll, but that was because it doesn't work period.

2. Lack of communication between Volks USA and Volks Japan: I was a VS member whilst in Japan due to the copious amounts I spent in the store. Upon returning back to the USA and wanting to get in on that SWEET SWEET FCS SPECIAL OWNER'S EVENT ACTION, I was dismayed at the fact that I needed an additional membership card- this one from having made a purchase at Volks USA. So I purchased a restringing tool just to be granted the right to buy something else. But it wasn't so much the having to buy a second item that was annoying as was the...

3. Retardedly high domestic shipping cost: When shipping from Volks USA, you are given the option of UPS or UPS. I get that they want their dolls to arrive safely, but my 13 dollar stringing tool had a shipping cost of 10 bucks. Besides, UPS is just as bad with manhandlng packages as USPS and Fedex are.

4. No Networking With Sato: Sato does not ship to the US despite that there is a US store and non-Sato FCS orders are fulfilled at the same factory and shipped to the US for LA Sumika orders. If an American really hauls their ass to Sato, they should be able to get that doll shipped to the LA Sumika.

5. No Male Dollfie Dreams: This really isn't something that pisses me off as something that I just don't understand. Dollfie Dream is mass produced and is part of the cash cow that holds the company up. It's targeted towards mostly-male Otaku who want a doll of Yoko from Gurren Lagaan. They don't really pay attention to the American fans much, because I think your typical American Otaku would rather a doll of Kamina from Gurren Lagaan. And if they were REALLY hurting for cash, they could partner with Square to make Sephiroth and Cloud Dollfie Dreams and REALLY rake in the dough.

4:48 pm - Vampire Teeth Clarification:
I love Bram Stoker's original Dracula novel and read it at least three or four times through. I've gone through a pretty heavy Anne Rice phase, watched my fair share of Buffy, and get why people like Twilight though I'll never be caught dead actually reading it. I know a decent bit about vampires and this makes me think that vampire heads are profoundly silly.
I'm prejudiced against teeth at all. I would never get a doll with visible teeth. I just don't like them personally. That reason is merely aesthetic. My annoyance for vampire fangs is conceptual.
Vampires cannot exist in large numbers unless they are the majority population and are domesticating foodsources. So a world in which vampires have factory farms of humans and treat them as little more than cattle? That's the only situation when vampires are going to be openly vampires. Everywhere else, the business of vampire survival is in pretending NOT TO BE A VAMPIRE. Being a vampire is like being gay in Saudi Arabia... you'll live longer the deeper you hide yourself in the closet.
So if I had a vampire character, that character would be spending a lot of time and effort in blending in and not seeming like a vampire, which visible fangs on BJD sculpts totally negate.

That being said, there are BJD features that I personally would not want for my dolls (like the aforementioned visible teeth) that nevertheless have been shown to be quite beautiful (skylarkza's Narae comes to mind) on specific dolls. However, I have not seen a SINGLE Vampire-toothed doll that didn't look stupid to me.

Prove me wrong then, Flist.

Top Ten Things I Hate About The BJD Hobby

1. Bobobie. I am still not entirely sure if Bobobie dolls are fugly because I have never seen them in real life. I do know that every single picture I've seen of a Bobobie is hideous, especially the pictures on the company's official site. What killed me is the pic of one of their dolls and instead of photographing it with a wig or bald they tied an unhemmed kerchief around her head. The doll itself is pale and skinny and the overall effect is that it has cancer, when the doll IS cancer. The owner photos are almost as bad, because the only people who get Bobobies are clueless n00bs who think sock couture is a good idea.

2. Anyone Who Takes Volks Seriously: I was ALMOST going to say "Volks" and be ZOMG TEH EDGEY, but this is the company that put out Hikaru Genji and so I can't fault them for anything, no matter how many Edens and Micheles they release. Volks is fucking hilarious, Sato is hilarious, Tenshi-No-Brush is recommended by zero out of ten dentists and is EPICALLY hilarious. They put out nice clothes, high-quality resin, and some beautiful sculpts, but their psudeo-mysticism is downright laughable. Lining up for super-hot-limited-doll? Awesome. Dolpa? Awesome. Not struggling to hold back laughter during an omukae ceremony, taking the keigo and crap seriously? Cancer.

3. Den of Angels: DoA is a place to spam 40 mindless congratulatory posts to get access to that grail of grails... the marketplace. No one actually reads anyone else's posts, though I do for a laugh/to kill time. The majority of them are laughably bad. To add insult to injury, if people start actually discussing something the thread usually gets locked by a moderator. Protip: the only board more mindless than "general discussion" is "dolly debate."

4. SOOM: Their new website is a monkey abortion.

5. Anthro BJDs: Why? No, really... why? Are you a furry? I kind of get tinies, I just don't get this. The pigs are marginally cute... not $200 cute.

6. People who make their dolls transgender but have no idea what transgenderism is. Slapping a dress on your El and calling it transgender is just a failboat. It just kills me because I have a M2F character and I feel that the cancer of idiotic yaoitards is going to kill the plans I have for that segment of my inner universe.

7. People who do not have strong opinions about dolls: So you hate School Head C but you cover it up because you're afraid of hurting someone's feeeeeeeeeelings. If you hate a mold/doll size/company then be open and just say it. The corollary, of course:

8. People who get offended when people don't like their dolls: Hey, I get it if you don't like Hounds/Volks/Elfdolls/etc. I don't really care if you think my doll is fug. My dolls are mine and I don't need your validation. Now I don't see why you need mine.

9. Cheap, shit eyes, be they acrylic or mass-produced glass: I got my Drop Rops today and boy are they sexellent. Just waiting for my Dollshe Urethanes. Once I get access to a working camera, we'll have a nice comparison post up and out there for all yous. But yes, shit eyes are shit. Totally ruin the doll's look, I say.

10. Heads with vampire teeth: What is a doll? A miserable little pile of secrets!
