Top Ten Things I Hate About The BJD Hobby

1. Bobobie. I am still not entirely sure if Bobobie dolls are fugly because I have never seen them in real life. I do know that every single picture I've seen of a Bobobie is hideous, especially the pictures on the company's official site. What killed me is the pic of one of their dolls and instead of photographing it with a wig or bald they tied an unhemmed kerchief around her head. The doll itself is pale and skinny and the overall effect is that it has cancer, when the doll IS cancer. The owner photos are almost as bad, because the only people who get Bobobies are clueless n00bs who think sock couture is a good idea.

2. Anyone Who Takes Volks Seriously: I was ALMOST going to say "Volks" and be ZOMG TEH EDGEY, but this is the company that put out Hikaru Genji and so I can't fault them for anything, no matter how many Edens and Micheles they release. Volks is fucking hilarious, Sato is hilarious, Tenshi-No-Brush is recommended by zero out of ten dentists and is EPICALLY hilarious. They put out nice clothes, high-quality resin, and some beautiful sculpts, but their psudeo-mysticism is downright laughable. Lining up for super-hot-limited-doll? Awesome. Dolpa? Awesome. Not struggling to hold back laughter during an omukae ceremony, taking the keigo and crap seriously? Cancer.

3. Den of Angels: DoA is a place to spam 40 mindless congratulatory posts to get access to that grail of grails... the marketplace. No one actually reads anyone else's posts, though I do for a laugh/to kill time. The majority of them are laughably bad. To add insult to injury, if people start actually discussing something the thread usually gets locked by a moderator. Protip: the only board more mindless than "general discussion" is "dolly debate."

4. SOOM: Their new website is a monkey abortion.

5. Anthro BJDs: Why? No, really... why? Are you a furry? I kind of get tinies, I just don't get this. The pigs are marginally cute... not $200 cute.

6. People who make their dolls transgender but have no idea what transgenderism is. Slapping a dress on your El and calling it transgender is just a failboat. It just kills me because I have a M2F character and I feel that the cancer of idiotic yaoitards is going to kill the plans I have for that segment of my inner universe.

7. People who do not have strong opinions about dolls: So you hate School Head C but you cover it up because you're afraid of hurting someone's feeeeeeeeeelings. If you hate a mold/doll size/company then be open and just say it. The corollary, of course:

8. People who get offended when people don't like their dolls: Hey, I get it if you don't like Hounds/Volks/Elfdolls/etc. I don't really care if you think my doll is fug. My dolls are mine and I don't need your validation. Now I don't see why you need mine.

9. Cheap, shit eyes, be they acrylic or mass-produced glass: I got my Drop Rops today and boy are they sexellent. Just waiting for my Dollshe Urethanes. Once I get access to a working camera, we'll have a nice comparison post up and out there for all yous. But yes, shit eyes are shit. Totally ruin the doll's look, I say.

10. Heads with vampire teeth: What is a doll? A miserable little pile of secrets!

10:24 pm - New Doll
Elfdoll Aden arrived. Intro will be soon, as soon as I can get a working camera, that is (mine died.)
Anyway, I stood all three dolls in a bit of a triangle and knelt down, looki8nf into the center, and I felt as if I had been taken away from this world and into another one, and I felt very calm.
This is why I collect dolls/action figures.

10:59 am - The Collector's Mindset
Upon returning to the US, I subscribed to both Fashion Doll Quarterly (FDQ) and Haute Doll magazines. My reasoning for doing this was purely from a collector's standpoint- both magazines routinely offer special doll orders to their subscribers, the inciting one being the release of Volks' Shizu after the cancellation of NY Dolpa. I don't think I would have ordered Shizu had I been able to at the time, but who knows what FDQ-exclusives will pop up in the future. The same can be said for Haute Doll. Besides, doll reading material is always good especially as I don't get Volks News anymore (what WILL I read on the toilet?)
These magazines, though, try to cover a lot of bases- FDQ in particular snares subscribers by offering exclusive BJDs, yet the majority of content is skewed towards fashion doll collectors. This viewpoint towards their dolls and collections is quite different from what I've seen of BJD collectors. I wondered in the past why BJD people don't seem to collect in the 1/6th scale. I'll offer a few ruminations on the strict divide between both types of collectors after the cut.

Journey Onward )

Up next will be my picture reviews of the Star Trek Barbie dolls (minus Kirk) and the box opening of my next character doll, who should be arriving tomorrow. Yes, I managed to get an Elfdoll Aden limited at cost from Junkyspot. No, I wasn't planning to order him. Let's hope it goes well. Due to this unforseen expense (as well as the expense of buying Volks option parts for their special campaign) I've put all other doll purchases ON HOLD until I start getting paid. Still, it's an exciting time that I can't wait to share with all yous.

Till next time!

9:26 pm - RP MEME TIME
Let's play a game.

Go to this site. They have dress-up generators for both boys and girls. It's slightly limited in that heights, body types, and skin colors are invariable, but as you will.
Pick a friend who knows your characters well to play this game with. First, select a certain number of characters ([info]kaedekei and I picked seven). First, make a doll for each of your seven characters. Then, tell your friend which seven you made, and have them tell you. Then make seven dolls for the same characters your friend chose.
Now mix them up and make an LJ post and try to guess who is who.

A variation= Don't even tell your friend which characters you are doing for Ultimate Mode.

My half of the contest below the cut.

Let's guessing. )

12:44 pm - Volks, I love thee and hate thee
So it seems that Volks USA is selling FCS exclusive hands, feet, wigs, and omukae outfits to previous FCS customers. I ordered a stringing tool (why the fuck was shipping 10 bucks?!) just to get a Volks USA account number and I will call them later just to be sure the fact that I got Jon in Sato in Sunlight skin is not going to preclude me from this. I don't think it will, as his "Certificate of Birth" is in my name, but it never hurts to ask.
It's obvious now: the economy is negatively affecting Volks especially with their cancellation of NYC Dolpa. First we had the ability to order extra hands and feet with FCS orders, now this. This is just a way for Volks to drum up more sales without ruining the exclusivity of FCS (I can only get Sunlight skintone parts in SD-10/13G size.)
Needless to say I am going to gun for the pointing and saluting hands as well as the Waloli girls' omukae set. I am considering trying for the other girls' omukae sets as well- they each come with a pair of shoes and we all know how expensive THOSE are. I hate the SD-10 Boys' omukae sets (except for the kimono, which I already have thankyouverymuch) and I will eventually get a girl so I can make the outfits work in some capacity in the future.
I promise I will take photos soon, especially as I am planning on redoing Aradi's faceup next weekend.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE <3
Some things have changed since I left Japan, all of them are for the better.
1. I started dating a guy. Things are going well.
2. I got a job doing IT work at my old college. Job means money. Money means dolls and video games and fun fun times.

I will try to post more in the future, especially since I am finding I have a lot to say about dolls and video games, and now that I have the money to spend on them, I will post.

5:31 pm - The Ten Commandments of Volks
1. I am thy Mother SD, keeper of thine angels and Other Yourselves, and as such thou shalt not have any Dolls but those of Volks, welcomed each in turn with capes, candles, and unnecessary keigo. Thou shalt not deface such dolls with wigs, eyes, or accouterments from any other company.

2. Thou shalt not take the name of SD falsely, calling heathen LUTS and Angelregion dolls SD. There is no SD but Volks SD.

3. Thou shalt remember Tenshi-no-Sato, the holy place of pilgrimage, and once unto thine adult life make a pilgrimage there. Thou shalt tithe fifty percent, perhaps more, of thine worldly income to the nearest Sumika.

4. Honor thine dolls, for they represent thee at all stages of thine life- from the thou-yet-to-be floating in amniotic fluid, to the thou-who-doth-choketh-upon-dust-of-resin.

5. Thou shalt not murder the image of thine SD with wite-out and Sharpie.

6. Thou shalt not touch the private bits of thine SDs inappropriately.

7. Thou shalt not steal from the corporation of Volks, but thou mayest steal from others to finance thine regular tithe.

8. Thou shalt not bear false witness whence ordering LEs, one-offs or FCS SDs. The dolls thou dost order are bound to thy soul once thou handest the cashier thine charge card. Therefore, thou mayest only order dolls for thine own use, and thou mayest not sell thine dolls to finance thine crack/doujinshi/food addictions.

9. Thou shalt not covet thine neighbor's SDs.

10. Thou shalt not covet dirty Korean or Chinese BJDs, for they are the work of the Dark One and have no place on Holy Ground.

2:37 pm - Geeky Plans
This is especially intended for [info]utopiantrunks

I'd like to come down to Kansai for the weekend of April 25-26. We can get tickets to Takarazuka (薔薇に降る雨、AMOURそれは) for that Sunday, and possibly hit up Sato the day before. If you're cool with that, awesome.

May 29th the next Trek movie comes out. Also, Takarazuka will put on ELISABETH, only the best. show. ever. Tickets are going to sell like hotcakes so I will try my best to get them on April 18th, the day they come out. We can talk a bit more about it afterwards but if you want I can come down for Trek and Elisabeth....

9:00 am - Ode to Laziness
I swear I am going to upload the photostory soon. I swearisweariswear. However, we've recently had a cold snap with a SNOWSTORM yesterday morning, so I get back from work to bury myself under the covers. Forecast says it's going to rain every day for a week.
If you are a Brit or have ever resided in Britland (or from like Seattle) you are going to call me a pussy. The difference is that Toyama isn't pretty and is even less so in the rain.

Man, I was going to talk about Takarazuka or dolls or video games or something but I simply can't. It's another fun day of feeling my soul being crushed in a vise. Oh well, whatever, Imma go study.

9:04 am - Chronicles of the Strange: Cons and Such
There is so much I want to say about cons, geekmeets and such but I for the life of me don't know where to start. So I shall begin by considering the origins of geeks. Are geeks geeks because they are strange or strange because they are geeks?

Either way, I as well as many other geeks feel as if we do not "jive" with the rest of society, but still we long for camaraderie, adventure, and steel on steel. While the latter two may only be had at a tabletop game, LARP, or video game session, the first flourishes at our cons and events.

Of course, the worst part of these events is saying goodbye. Events grant us the chance to be ourselves for a little while. But eventually costumes and garb need to be swapped for street clothes, dolls need to be returned to cases, pointed ears yanked off and dice chucked into our velvet pouches, nestling in the bottom of our backpacks. And as [info]utopiantrunks pointed out, we make our way to train stations and bus terminals to part for a time, floating amidst "normal" society until the next such meet.

This isn't to say there are some of us that "live the life" such as the Whitewater juror who wore her Starfleet uniform to the trial. Especially in America, the self-proclaimed "Otaku" run around in Naruto headbands and anime t-shirts. These people irk me and have irked me for a while, whereas the juror in uniform and the Klingons bowling do not bother me at all. In the end, I believe it is because of the preteen attention whoring of the American Otaku set- the loudness, the lounging around Barnes and Noble destroying the manga, the grabby-hands at every BJD who is dragged along to a convention, the unwarranted glomping of anyone remotely attractive in cosplay. But this is another rant entirely. The key is this- most of us are fairly quiet, respective, generally low-key types and the parting of company is always a cause for sadness as we trudge back to cover ourselves up for the workaday world.

11:18 am - Down, Down, to Den Den Town you go, my lad!
So we went to Den Den Town yesterday. Den Den Town is the Akihabara of Osaka: Electronics stores, video game stores, anime and manga stores, "maid cafes" where otaku pay cute girls in costumes to talk to them, and PORN EVERYWHERE.
Of course, I took pictures, and I bought a lot of shit.
